One of the most overlooked pre-swing fundamentals is alignment. Having the correct alignment will help you start your swing on plane and allow you to hit shots that go towards your target. However, most golfers do not have a true understanding of how to align their bodies to the target, resulting in inconsistent shot patterns.
The proper alignment will have your feet, knees, hips and shoulders pointing parallel to your target line at address. I have the word parallel bolded because the majority of my students think their body should be on the target line. When your body is on the target line, your aim will be well left of your target. Aligning left of your target will start your backswing off plane and create an “out to in” swing path.
A great drill to help you feel the correct alignment is to set up an alignment station on the practice tee. First, pick your target and lay down a club that lines up directly at the target. Next, get in your address position and lay down another club parallel to your toes. When you step away from the clubs they should look like rail road tracks; the left track represents your body alignment and the right track will be your target line. The picture to the right is a great example of how proper body alignment. Practicing with an alignment station will help you feel the correct alignment and get you focused on your target. When your alignment is perfect you will begin to hit longer shots that fly at your target.
